| 89 children competed in the Bedford Junior Open
Chess Congress. The Rutherford Building at Bedford Modern School proved to be
an excellent new venue for the annual event which is qualifier for the
prestigious London Junior Chess Championships held at the end of the
year. James Hutt from Bedford Junior Chess Club and BMS stormed to victory in the Under 15 tournament with 6 wins out of 6 The Under 12 competition was keenly contested with a four way tie with Madhi Elango (Stevenage), Alvin Gardner (Cambridge), Arun Veerappan (Carshalton) and Daniel Wood (Guilsborough), all scoring 5 out of 6. The Under 10 event saw a shared first place between Brian Hornsby from Milton Keynes and Alexander Long from Potters Barr, both with 5 wins from 6 matches. Ten players contested the Under 8 crown but Oliver Scanlon's near perfect 5.5 from 6 meant there was only ever going to be one winner. The team event could have gone either way right until the last round with Bedford Modern School finally holding off Bedford Junior Chess Club to take the Mrs Frost Trophy. Steve Pike |
