Cordon Trophy 2009
The 2009 Cordon Trophy was the closest finish in
many years with the first 4 teams covered by a single point.
The tournament started in a very different fashion with both Bedford and Milton Keynes A scoring maximums in the first roung and
establishing a lead of 1.5 points over everybody else. By the end of
the 2nd round they had scored 7.5 and 7 respectively, stretching the lead over Leighton Buzzard
and Open University to 2 points. Bedford lost their lead in the 3rd round
scoring just 3 draws. Milton Keynes A scored 3 and went into the last round
with a 1 point lead. Leighton Buzzard narrowed the gap, scoring 3.5.
Milton Keynes A scored 2 early wins re-inforcing their
lead, but losing their last 2 games opened the door for the chasing bunch. Open
University scored a very creditable 3.5 to reach 11 points but took a point off Leighton Buzzard which restricted their score to
3 and a total of 11.5. This left Bedford with the chance to
catch or overtake Milton Keynes. 2 scored from the first 3 games to finish meant that a
win in the last game to finish would mean a tie for 1st. With both players
very short of time, Michael Botteley reached a won position but then stalemated Ben
Grainger, leaving Milton Keynes just half a point ahead of the field.
Milton Keynes win brings
to an end Bedford's 4 year winning streak.
