Four Counties met at Hatfield on 21st April to contest the Team Rapidplay competition. The event was run as an all-play-all, with 30 minutes each on the clock. As well as the main competition a Handicap "Trophy" (nobody knew where the actual trophy was!) was also at stake, based on average grades and team performance.
We were the weakest team there, and the first round saw us pitted against Kent, the strongest, with an impressive average grade of over 190. Although we lost heavily we did not disgrace ourselves, obtaining results on five boards including two wins – two points more than predicted. In fact, we did better against Kent than both of the other teams.
Round two was the unofficial EACU championship against Cambs, and we managed to come out on top 6½-5½, reversing the expected score.
Going into round 3 it was clear that Kent would win at a canter, but the other teams were all tied on 10 points. We lost narrowly to Herts (but again exceeded expectations) to finish in third place. Kents 12-0 drubbing of Cambs confirmed first and last places.
We are now the proud holders of the Handicap Trophy, with a score of +4½.
Peter Constantinou was our only unbeaten player, with an impressive 2/3 on Board 1.
Thanks to all who played.
Kevin Williamson
